South Portland seeing rash of car thefts, with 25 reported so far in April

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A man and a woman were arrested Tuesday afternoon in connection with one of more than 25 motor vehicle thefts that have been reported in South Portland since April 1, according to police.

South Portland police have received 51 reports of stolen motor vehicles so far in 2012. Of those, 26 of them have been filed since April 1, including 11 on Tuesday, Police Lt. Frank Clark said in a news release.

One of the victims reported seeing a person carrying a backpack that had been stolen from him boarding a city bus in the area of Cash Corner shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday, according to the release.

Police pulled the bus over on Broadway and arrested Jason Fudge, 38, and Lauren Burns, 20, both of South Portland. Both were charged with theft and theft of a motor vehicle.

Police are continuing to investigate, and the case is being referred to the District Attorney’s office. Additional charges against Burns and Fudge, both of whom remained at the Cumberland County Jail on Wednesday morning, could be pending, Clark said.

Residents are encouraged to lock their vehicles.
