BATH, Maine — A 36-year-old Topsham man was arrested Monday night in the locker room of the Bath YMCA for allegedly assaulting a woman on Saturday at a Bath apartment.

Fermin A. Sawtell, 36, of 75 Tedford Road, Topsham, was charged with assault, criminal trespass and two counts of violation of conditions of release, Bath Police Lt. Stan Cielinski said today.

The alleged victim reported to police on Monday that when she went to the apartment on Saturday, Sawtell “got angry with her, grabbed her wrist and tried to force her out of the doorway,” Cielinski said. He had no information on the cause of the argument.

“Then he came at her again and she had mace, and she sprayed him with the mace,” Cielinski said.

The woman hesitated at first to report the crime, but on Monday told police she had bruises and scratches from the incident.

Police located Sawtell at approximately 6:45 p.m. in the locker room at the Bath Area Family YMCA and arrested him.

The criminal trespass charge was issued because Sawtell was previously served with a trespass order barring him from being at the apartment, according to Cielinski.

He was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail.
