FARMINGTON — Devin Fitzgerald and Amy Jones each singled, doubled and drove in two runs as the University of Maine-Farmington beat UM-Presque Isle 7-2 to complete a sweep of a softball doubleheader Monday.
UMF beat UMPI in the first game 5-3 when the Beavers took a 5-0 lead and then held off an Owls’ three-run rally in the seventh.
Kaitlyn Bartlett notched two singles, a double and two RBIs to spark 8-8 UMF. Shannon Mitchell chipped in with two RBI singles and Jillian Withee had a run-producing single. Emma Vaillancourt scattered five hits but walked six while striking out nine to earn the victory.
Carolynn Tuck hit a two-run single in seventh and scored on a wild pitch for the 6-17 Owls. Kathleen Higgins had two hits.
In the second game, Mitchell hit a solo homer for the Beavers and Tatiana Vogel chipped in with an RBI double and sacrifice fly. Meghan Plant also doubled. Bartlett notched the win as she allowed only three hits, walked five and struck out five.
Desiree Smith hit an RBI double for UMPI.
Bowdoin 9, St. Joe’s 4
At Standish, Tim McGarry doubled, singled twice and drove in three runs to lift Bowdoin by St. Joseph’s.
Sam Canales chipped in with a home run, two singles and two RBIs for the 14-8 Polar Bears and Luke Regan added a solo home run and single. Jordan Edgett contributed with a single and double. Erik Jacobsen earned the win and Jay Loughlin recorded the save after pitching four scoreless two-hit innings.
Brandon Chase tripled, singled and drove in a run for St. Joe’s, now 21-3. Sam Butts, Alex Lorenc and Nick Lops each chipped in with two singles. Lops added an RBI and Mike Pratt had a sacrifice fly.
