WINTERPORT, Maine — Police said that fatigue appears to be the reason a Belmont man drove into two parked cars Friday afternoon, causing minor damage to the vehicles but no injuries to any people.

Timothy Simmons, 44, told police he had fallen asleep before crashing into the cars at 4:52 p.m. on Main Road in Winterport. His 2003 Ford struck a 2001 Chevrolet owned by Melissa Kidwell of Winterport. He also hit a 2005 Mazda owned by John Ramirez of Winterport. According to the police report, the vehicles had minor damage.

Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that Simmons told police who went to the scene that he hadn’t been sleeping well and had eaten only some yogurt all day long. Trafton said that low blood sugar may have been another factor in the crash.

Officers gave him a ride home, the chief deputy said.
