UM-Presque Isle softball team notches two victories

LYNN, Mass. — Desiree Smith sparked the University of Maine-Presque Isle from the leadoff spot with a 5-for-7 effort in two games to help lift the Owls by Fisher College 12-0 and Vermont Technical College 6-4 in a softball doubleheader Saturday.

In the first game, Krista Coffin allowed only three hits and a walk while striking out five to give the 4-15 Owls the win. Kathleen Higgins recorded a double, two singles and an RBI and Lainey Herring added two hits. Smith had three hits and scored three runs.

In the second game, UMPI scored five runs in the first inning with Smith scoring the first run after she doubled, stole third and came in on a Kellie Peers single. Herring followed with an RBI triple and Carolynn Tuck chipped in with an RBI single. Courtney Bishop earned the win as she scattered four runs and eight hits without walking a batter and striking out four.

Bates sweeps Colby

At Waterville on Saturday, Leah Maciejewski homered in the first game and went 3-for-3 in the second game as Bates College swept a doubleheader with Colby College.

The Bobcats (10-6) won the first game 5-4 and took the second game 12-1.

In the first game, Bates plated the winning run in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Lauren Dobish. Maciejewski collected two hits, including a solo home run in the fourth. Courtney Talcott singled twice and scored a run.

Lindsay Peterson led the Mules (4-13) with two singles and an RBI. Brianne Wheeler doubled and singled while Meaghan Lewis singled twice.

In the second game, Alayna Garbarino paced a 16-hit Bates attack with a double, a single and three RBIs. Anna Marie Martino and Maciejewski each had three singles and two RBIs. Dobish chipped in with two singles and two RBIs.

Colby was led by Lewis with two singles and an RBI. Katie Graichen added two singles.

BU sweeps Maine

At Orono on Saturday, Melanie Delgado hit a leadoff double and scored on groundout with one out in the 12th inning as the Terriers earned a 3-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Maine.

Boston University topped Maine in the second game 6-1.

Sunday’s series finale was postponed because of rain.

In the first game, Holli Floetker pitched 10 innings for the 22-12 Terriers, giving up one run on five hits with eight strikeouts. Erica Casacci drove in the first run on a fielder’s choice in the third inning.

Jean Stevens hit a solo home run in the seventh inning for the 7-24 Black Bears. EmJ Fogel added a double and a single.

In the second game, Megan Volpano led Boston University with a double, two singles and three RBIs. Whitney Tuthill tossed seven innings, allowing one run on three hits.

Hilary Kane posted a solo home run in the seventh for Maine. Jennifer Eberhardt chipped in with a double.

Castleton sweeps MMA

At Castine on Saturday, Tori Fearon collected two doubles, a single and two RBIs as Castleton State College topped Maine Maritime Academy 11-0 in five innings in the opening game of a doubleheader.

Castleton defeated the Mariners in the nightcap 5-3.

In the opener, Taylor Lively pitched five-hit shutout with five strikeouts to earn the victory for 9-13 Castleton. Stephanie Sylvester recorded a double and a single with three RBIs.

Andi Flannery finished with two singles for the 9-8 Mariners.

In the nightcap, Castleton claimed the lead for good with two runs in the top of the seventh on a Maine Maritime throwing error. Bridget Dusha and Caitline Mackey each had a double, a single and an RBI.

Erica Taylor hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning for the Mariners. Flannery added a double and a single.

USM splits

At North Dartmouth, Mass. on Saturday, Stefanie Stockwell pitched a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts as the University of Southern Maine avoided the sweep with a 4-0 win over the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Huskies dropped the first game 4-2.

In the first game, UMass Dartmouth (6-12) notched all of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Emily Pontes led the Corsairs with a double and three singles.

Kayla Kennedy and Meghan Rumore each hit an RBI single for the 1-17 Huskies.

In the second game, Southern Maine collected 12 hits en route to the victory. Katie Davis had a solo home run and two singles with three RBIs. Stockwell doubled and singled while Kristen Duross singled twice.

UMF wins two

At Farmington, Mass. on Saturday, the University of Maine at Farmington allowed just two hits as the Beavers swept a doubleheader with Johnson State College.

UMF (6-8) took the first game 10-0 and won the second game 9-0.

In the first game, Amy Jones highlighted a nine-run third inning with a three-run home run. Kaitlyn Bartlett chipped in with a two-run triple. Devin Fitzgerald finished with a double and a single. Emma Vaillancourt pitched a one-hitter with a hit batter and six strikeouts.

In the second game, the Beavers scored three times in each of the first three innings en route to the win. Shannon Mitchell homered, doubled and drove in three runs. Jones added a two-run home run. Bartlett earned the win with seven strikeouts and helped her own cause with two RBIs.
