BANGOR – Lawrence E. Hurd, 101, passed away peacefully April 1, 2012, at home. He was born March 11, 1911, in Old Town, son of Charles and Ida (McPheters) Hurd.

Lawrence was a graduate of Old Town High School, class of 1928. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Lawrence was employed by Great Northern Paper Co., woodlands department. He had many interests that included the outdoors, painting, spending time with family and friends, and he was well known for his basket making.

Lawrence was predeceased by his loving wife, Charline S. Hurd, after 58 years of marriage. He is survived by three children, Barbara, Lawrence Jr. and fiancee, Valencia Cobb, and Charles and wife, Cathy; grandchildren, Christina, Andrew and wife, Danielle, and Heather and her husband, Edward Mercier; great-grandchildren, MacKenzie and Mitchell Mercier; sister-in-law, Marion Huntley; brother-in-law, William Sprague and wife, Julia; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, one sister; daughter-in-law, Sandra; and his favorite pet, Wiggy.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Canon Mary Ann Taylor officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the service at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. Donations in memory of Lawrence may be made to New Hope Hospice, Inc., P.O.
