GORHAM, Maine — Husson University pitchers Becca McCarty and Kody Lyon powered the Eagles to a pair of college softball victories over the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday.
Husson won the opener 7-2 and took the second game 17-0 in five innings.
McCarty, a sophomore from Skowhegan, allowed 10 hits but spaced them out as Husson downed the Huskies in the first game.
McCarty also hit a solo homer and a single and picked up two RBIs. Ashley Smith of Ellsworth also collected two RBIs for the Eagles, and Heidi Shaw and Aimee Mortensen hit a double and single apiece.
Stefanie Stockwell had three hits for the Huskies, Annie Mitchell and Meghan Rumore each had two hits and an RBI, and losing pitcher Caitlin LeBorgne had two hits.
In the second game, Lyon improved to 6-1 for the season as she held the Huskies (0-14) to five hits in picking up the shutout.
Victoria Overlock of Belfast and Lona Sargent of Sullivan each had a double and single for the Eagles (12-7), and Aimee Mortensen of Biddeford had a single and knocked in three runs.
Bates sweeps MMA
At Lewiston, Leah Maciejewski pounded a grand slam over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth inning, setting up a 9-1 win over Maine Maritime in a game shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule.
The Bobcats won the opener 8-0, also in five innings.
In the opener, Bates scored five times in the first inning and continued to lead until Maciejewski also knocked in what proved to be the game-ending run in the fourth. She finished with two singles and three RBIs.
In the second game, pitcher Erica Taylor rapped a solo home run for MMA (7-7) in the the second to cut Bates’ lead to 2-1, but Maciejewski plated two runs in the bottom of the second before capping the 7-6 Bobcats’ five-run fourth with her grand slam.
Maciejewski was 6-for-6 with nine RBIs on the day.
