BATH, Maine — The chief of naval operations is paying a visit to Maine’s Bath Iron Works to get a look at the next-generation destroyer that’s under construction.

Adm. Jonathan Greenert will see assembled hull segments of the future USS Zumwalt on Wednesday. He will also participate in a ceremony marking the start of construction of the third and final warship in the line.

The 600-foot-long warships are the largest destroyers to be built at Bath Iron Works, and they will feature electric-drive propulsion and an unconventional wave-piercing hull. The Zumwalt is due to be christened next year, and will be followed by two more just like it.

It’s Greenert’s first visit to the shipyard since becoming chief of naval operations last September. He’s visiting at the request of Sen. Susan Collins.
