BANGOR, Maine — Amid the recent legal proceedings involving trademark issues surrounding what is perhaps Bangor’s most famous sandwich — the Coffee Pot — the Bangor Daily News decided a taste test was in order and picked up three versions of the sandwich being sold in the city.

The Coffee Pot court case involves the Coffee Pot Cafe at 652 Broadway which alleged in a 10-count civil complaint filed last month in U.S. District Court that The Legacy Sandwich Shop at 163 State St. infringed on its trademark names for its sandwiches and that it engaged in deceptive trade practices.

Of course we picked up a sandwich from both the cafe and Legacy Sandwich, but we also purchased a Coppee Pot from Court Street Market for our participants to try.

And who did we find that was willing to participate in our blind taste test? A few Bangor firefighters who were more than happy to give an opinion on which sandwich tasted the best and which was most like the famous original.

These sandwiches have a lot to live up to after the original business closed on Dec. 31, 2009.

The business had operated for nearly 80 years making its signature sandwich made with ham or salami, onions, cheese and vegetables.

As for the taste test results — Legacy Sandwich came out on top 2-1 in overall taste and 3-0 for being the closest to the original.
