Time running out to order motorcycle breast cancer specialty plate

PORTLAND, Maine — It’s crunch time in the effort to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research and support through the creation of a Maine Breast Cancer specialty license plate for motorcycles, the first motorcycle specialty plate in Maine.

Five hundred registrations for the new plates are needed by the time the Maine State Legislature adjourns in mid-April.

“To gain approval from the state to produce the new plates, there is a formal legislative process that we must go through which includes needing to obtain reservations from 500 individuals along with a payment of $25, which will guarantee them a plate when they become available,” said state Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess, the driving force behind the plates and breast cancer survivor and advocate.

Online registrations for the Maine Breast Cancer specialty license plate for motorcycles can be made at mainecancer.org/motorcycle.

Strang Burgess also was the creator of the Maine Breast Cancer specialty plate for automobiles, with more than 15,000 plates on the road since 2008. The plates raised more than $400,000 for breast cancer research and support, she said. When the motorcycle specialty plate becomes a reality, all proceeds from the effort will stay in Maine and will be split equally between Maine Cancer Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Fund ( mainecancer.org), Maine Breast Cancer Coalition’s Support Service Fund ( mainebreastcancer.org) and Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program’s mammogram fund ( maine.gov/dhhs/bohdcfh/bcp/index.htm).
