SACO, Maine — Authorities say three people were left homeless after an early morning fire destroyed their Saco home.

The fire, which was first reported at about 1 a.m. Sunday, sent flames shooting through the roof of the three-story home.

Two adults and a child were asleep when one of the adults awoke to the smell of smoke, according to Capt. Bill Madore. They made it out of the building, although two family cats remain unaccounted for.

No names were released.

Madore said the fire inflicted heavy damage to the roof and the third floor. The first and second floors sustained extensive smoke and water damage. He said the home will likely have to be demolished.

Several neighboring fire departments, including Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach, responded.

The cause remains under investigation.
