SULLIVAN, Maine — A Hancock couple was killed Saturday morning when the car they were in crossed into the path of an oncoming vehicle on Route 1 in Sullivan, according to Maine State Police.

The driver, 59-year-old Cynthia Johnson, and her 58-year-old husband, George Johnson were killed instantly in the crash, according to a press release from Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Troopers said Johnson’s car veered into the opposite lane about 8:30 a.m. and slammed into a car driven by Melissa Dominy, 44, of Bar Harbor, who was flown by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with multiple injuries, the release states.

That section of Route 1 was closed for several hours following the accident.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office assisted troopers with the investigation.

There was no explanation why Johnson’s car crossed the centerline, according to the release.
