Pickup destroyed by fire in Cross Lake

T17 R5, Maine — Volunteer firefighters with North Lakes Fire & Rescue quickly put out a pickup truck fire on Route 162 in Cross Lake early Thursday afternoon after the driver called to report flames were shooting out of the cab.

Fire Chief Darren Woods said the driver, Kevin Ouellette of Sinclair, had parked the truck on the side of the road about two miles from the intersection of Route 161 while he searched in the woods for deer and moose antlers.

Ouellette told firefighters that when he returned to his truck he started it up and let it idle for a moment while he sat smoking a cigarette. When he noticed flames coming out from under the hood of his mid-2000 Ford F350, Ouellette jumped out and called for help, according to Woods.

The fire chief said Friday that the call was recorded at 12:15 p.m. and when firefighters arrived at 12:19 p.m., the vehicle was in flames. Woods said nine firefighters and two firetrucks responded to the call and had the flames out within five minutes.

The fire chief said that the truck was demolished and that the damage was too extensive to determine the cause. No one was injured and the truck was towed to a garage in Frenchville.

Woods said he did not know whether Ouellette had found any antlers or lost any in the fire.
