WENHAM, Mass. — The University of Maine-Farmington opened its softball season with a doubleheader sweep of Gordon College Monday, 13-0 and 15-1.
Emma Vaillancourt allowed only two hits and a walk in five innings while striking out nine in the first game for the 2-0 winners. Kaitlyn Bartlett sparked the offense with a three-run home run and Devin Fitzgerald added a two-run triple.
Kerry McPartlan had two hits for Gordon.
Jillian Withee singled twice, doubled and drove in four runs to lead UMF in the second game. Shannon Mitchell chipped in with two doubles and three RBIs while winning pitcher Bartlett and and Amy Jones each added a single and double. Lily Barry contributed two singles and two RBIs.
Shannon Dodds singled twice for Gordon.
UMPI loses 2 games
At Emory, Va., Emory & Henry College swept the UMaine-Presque Isle Owls 10-0 and 5-0.
Emory & Henry jumped out to a five-run lead after the first inning en route to the five-inning win in the first game.
Jennifer True hit a two-run home run to pace Emory & Henry in the second game while Carolynn Tuck sparked UMPI (1-10) with two hits and a stolen base. Winning pitcher Brandy Bryant struck out 14.
Wesley 18, UMPI 2
At Dover, Del., Sam Farnell drove in seven runs with a double and a grand slam to lead Wesley past UMaine-Presque Isle.
The Wolverines (15-7) scored 10 runs in the third inning to put the game away.
Jordan Duffy hit a solo home run for UMPI (1-13), Shane Smith tripled and Carlos Villoria had a sacrifice fly.
