Bryant baseball team sweeps Black Bears

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — The University of Maine baseball team managed just nine hits in two games and were swept in a baseball doubleheader by the Bryant University Bulldogs, 4-1 and 8-3 Saturday.

Bryant’s Craig Schlitter allowed only four Maine hits in the first game, walked one and struck out six in the seven-inning contest. Joseph Michaud started the second game for Bryant and held the Bears to three hits and one run over seven innings. He walked only one and struck out seven.

Bryant improved to 11-10 while Maine slipped to 7-14.

In the first game, Bryant jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Jamie Skagerland and a sacrifice fly by John Mullen.

The Black Bears scored their only run in the top of the third when Michael Fransoso crushed a leadoff triple to right field and scored on Colin Gay’s single.

Jeffrey Gibbs (0-4) pitched a solid game for the Bears in the loss as he allowed only four hits, walked two and struck out four.

In the second game, the Bulldogs scored six runs in the third inning and added two the next inning to pull away from the Bears. Mike Delponte hit a grand slam in the third.

The Bears scored their first run in the second on a fielder’s choice grounder by Eric White. Fran Whitten scored the run after leading off with a single, stealing second base and moving to third on a Justin Leisenheimer single.

Maine added two more runs in the eighth when Ian Leisenheimer belted a two-run home run to center.
