BANGOR – Janice Miriam Cormier, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away March 23, 2012. She was born Sept. 8, 1925, in Woodland, Aroostook County, the daughter of Edward Otto Neilander and Fae (Green).
She graduated from Winterport High School in 1944 and worked for First National Store, Bangor Savings and Loan, and Maine Savings Bank. Janice had an infectious laugh, a zest for life, loved to dance, and in her later years was honored and thrilled to be presented with a plaque in August 2005 declaring her the number one fan of Winterport Dragway.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin A. Cormier, Jan. 20, 2012; her parents; a sister, Doris Marley; and a brother, Edward "Buddy" Neilander. She is survived by her children, Maureen Cormier of Bangor, Allen Cormier and his partner, Charlotte Gillen, of Bangor and Susanne Tirpak and her husband, Michael, of Richmond Hill, Ga. She is also survived by her grandchildren, April Cottle and her husband, Tim, of Greenbush, Annemarie Rutherford and her fiance, Dave Bellavance, of Old Town and Andrew Tirpak of Richmond Hill, Ga.; and great-grandchildren, Jacob Cormier, Isabella and Hendrix Cottle, and Izaac Rutherford. She is also survived by sisters, Adelia Comey of Enfield, Conn., and Novella Van Ackeren and her husband, Jim, of Chehalis, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Neilander of Arizona; several cousins, including Doreen Thompson of Brewer whom she considered a sister; nieces and nephews; and many dear friends, including Gloria Cyr of Bangor. The family also thanks Dr. Vincent Michaud and Dr. Sidney Block and their staff for the many years of professional and compassionate care of our mom, and the staff of Bangor Visiting Area Nurses and Hospice for their kindness and professionalism that enabled our mother to die with dignity at home.
Family and friends may visit 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ohio Street, Bangor. A time of refreshments and fellowship will be immediately afterward in the church center. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
