LITTLETON, Maine — A Caribou woman was injured late Tuesday evening after two cars collided on U.S. Route 1.

The crash took place just before 7 p.m., according to State Police Sgt. Brian Harris.

Taylor Hartley of Caribou was northbound in a 2003 Hyundai when Sheri Pryor pulled onto the road.

Harris said Pryor, a Monticello resident driving a 2003 Pontiac SUV, said that she did not see Hartley approaching. Hartley braked and tried to avoid Pryor but couldn’t and struck Pryor’s vehicle on the driver’s side door, flipping Pryor’s vehicle onto its side, Harris said.

A passenger in Hartley’s vehicle, Laurie Hartley of Caribou, was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital by ambulance after complaining of pain. The airbags in both vehicles deployed and all occupants were using seatbelts.

Traffic on Route 1 was contained to one lane for approximately an hour and a half while the accident was investigated and the scene cleared. Both vehicles are a total loss — Pryor’s vehicle sustained heavy damage to the driver’s side and Hartley’s vehicle sustained substantial front-end damage.

Harris was assisted at the scene by the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Border Patrol and Houlton Fire and Ambulance.
