BANGOR, ME — Hardy Girls Healthy Women is celebrating Maine girls statewide during its fifth annual Girls Rock! Weekend to be held March 30-April 1.
Girls Rock! Weekend is a three-day series of four events that celebrate the many ways Maine girls are leading the way to make positive change in their communities.
After kicking off the weekend with a leadership and social activism conference on Friday, March 30, in Waterville, Hardy Girls will take the weekend’s celebration to the state capital in Augusta for an awards ceremony.
Then it’s on to Portland for a rock concert featuring all-female groups from the Maine Academy of Modern Music and a screening of the film “Girls Rock: The Movie” on March 31.
Culminating the weekend’s series of events will be a celebration of the power of girls’ voices at the fifth annual Poetry Mash-up and Open Mic, set for noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at the Maine Discovery Museum in Bangor.
Girls and women are invited to the museum to share their creative work, poetry, music or spoken word. The event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.
“We are so thrilled to honor girls that are using their ideas and their voices in such unique and powerful ways,” said Anne Belden, Hardy Girls Healthy Women’s board president.
“This kind of recognition is exactly what Maine needs to inspire other girls to take the lead as well as change attitudes about what girls are capable of doing and what they care about,” Belden said.
Based in Waterville, Hardy Girls Healthy Women is a nonprofit organization working to ensure all women and girls are independent, safe and equal in their everyday lives.
