LAMOINE, Maine — A fire Monday morning destroyed a home on Route 184 and drew firefighters from half a dozen surrounding towns at they fought to put out the flames.

Assistant Fire Chief Stu Marckoon said Monday morning that the fire was reported around 8 a.m. by a homeowner. She had gone to feed some ducks in an outdoor enclosure, he said, and when she returned to the house she found flames inside. A man and two children who also live at the house already had left for the day, the man for work and the children for school, he said.

No one was hurt in the blaze, he said.

Marckoon said that initial reports indicate that the fire started in a downstairs bedroom but firefighters were unsure how it started. Marckoon said that, given the extensive damage, investigators might not be able to determine the cause.

The homeowners are Nicole Berzinis and Sean McLaughlin, Marckoon said early Monday afternoon. He said the home is insured.

The home and an ell attached to the back were gutted by the fire, which caused sections of the house to collapse as the flames weakened the charred structure. A nearby two-car garage and another out-building were not damaged.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by noon but still were working to dig through the rubble and put out hot spots, Marckoon said.

Several dozen firefighters responded from Lamoine, Ellsworth, Franklin, Hancock, Trenton, Sullivan, and Sorrento to fight the fire.

Marckoon said the State Fire Marshal’s Office has been contacted and plans to send investigators to the scene on Tuesday.
