High school basketball fans may find an antidote for any withdrawal symptoms they may be feeling in the aftermath of the Tourney 2012 with a drive to the Mount Desert Island-Ellsworth region this weekend.
That’s where the 20th annual Great Harbor House Shootout undergraduate tournament will feature 73 teams of high school and junior high players from throughout Eastern Maine getting a head start on the 2012-13 season.
Games begin late Friday afternoon at several gymnasiums in the area and will continue through championship games Sunday afternoon and evening.
Competition will be held in high school boys, high school girls, junior high boys and junior high girls divisions.
Twenty-five high school boys teams will be represented from a geographic area ranging from Presque Isle to Damariscotta, and early round matchups can pit teams from different classes and different regions against each other.
On Friday evening, for example, one of two teams that include Bangor High School players, the Bangor Rams, will square off against Jonesport-Beals at 6 p.m. at the MDI YMCA in Bar Harbor, followed at 7 by a matchup between Houlton and Oceanside of Rockland-Thomaston.
Twenty high school girls teams also will participate in the three-day event, as well as 15 junior high boys teams and 13 junior high girls teams.
