PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine College of Art is getting a $400,000 gift from conservationist Roxanne Quimby.

The Portland school says the gift will be used to support artists in residence, new faculty, student recruitment, equipment and resources to develop curriculum in the areas of fashion and textiles. As part of the donation, her Quimby Colony artist-in-residence program will be merged into the college curriculum.

Quimby made hundreds of millions of dollars when she sold the Burt’s Bees line of personal care products, which she co-founded in the 1980s. She has drawn attention in recent years with her proposal to donate 70,000 acres of land in northern Maine for the creation of a national park.
