BERWICK, Maine — Police are searching for a suspect in a string of car burglaries that took place last Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

Jake Hagy, 21, who is described as transient, is suspected of stealing from at least two cars after police found a flashlight and a bottle of cologne, which were identified by Berwick residents as items stolen from their two vehicles last week, Berwick Police Detective Bill Russell said

The items were found in a Somersworth, N.H., apartment where Hagy is believed to be currently staying and is keeping his belongings, according to Russell.

Hagy was approached by Somersworth police on Monday morning while standing on the train tracks on the border of the two states. When police asked him to step away from the tracks for safety, Hagy ran from the scene, according to Russell.

Other items were recovered from the apartment, but police and victims have yet to identify them all.

On March 6 and 7, seven or eight vehicles were burglarized on various connected streets in Berwick including George, Moulton, Merriam and Berry streets.

All of the vehicles were unlocked at the time of the thefts. Hagy is believed to frequent Berwick and Dover, N.H, according to Russell.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Hagy is encouraged to call Detective Bill Russell at 698-1136.
