Oceanside announces top students for Class of 2012

ROCKLAND, Maine — Oceanside High School has announced its first valedictorians for the high school that opened this school year as a consolidation of Rockland District High School and Georges Valley High School in Thomaston.

While many schools wait until after the third quarter ranking period to announce honor parts, the Rockland school system traditionally has named its top students after the second quarter.

Emma Mason, the daughter of Rodney and Anna Mason of Owls Head, and Alexander Wallace, the son of Peter and Tena Wallace of Spruce Head, were named earlier this month.

Mason said her parents encouraged her to do her best.

Mason said she wants to become a doctor and that’s why she has worked so hard in school. She said there also was another reason she worked so hard to excel.

“My sister was salutatorian and I wanted to beat her,” Mason said of her older sister Elsie.

Mason has been active in extracurricular activities. She participated in the Tiger Outreach program including a trip to New Orleans, when she was a sophomore, to help people who lost their homes to Hurricane Katrina.

She is a member of the National Honor Society, was on the math team, played soccer and participated in indoor and outdoor track.

The valedictorian, whose favorite subjects are biology and calculus, plans to attend the University of Maine focusing on biological engineering.

Wallace also cited strong parental support in his academic success.

“I never accepted anything less than I knew I was capable of doing,” Wallace said.

His said his favorite subject is math.

Wallace plans to go into engineering although he has not settled on a college.

He is a member of the National Honor Society. The St. George senior has been involved in the peer mentoring program at the high school where he mentors younger students. He also has been active in the Trekkers program, performed in school musicals, and played baseball, basketball and soccer.

The salutatorians for the Class of 2012 are Emily Bragg, the daughter of John and Susan Bragg of Owls Head, and Tamra Wallace, the daughter of Lindy Wallace and Kevin Kaler of Thomaston.

The other honor graduates for the Class of 2012 are Christina Carver, Heidi Mills, Katherine Lee, Bethany Berry, Rebecca Picard, Kyle D. Robinson, Benjamin Wallace, Alison Ward, Erika Brooks, Rosemary McGeady, Amanda Mank, Hannah Hersom, Marshall Cole, Hope Berry, Conor Pfister, Elizabeth Brown, Charles Baker, Alexander Dienesch-Calamari and Brooke Fournier.

Oceanside’s first graduation is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at the Oceanside East gymnasium.
