A Sanford company creating new technologies for disease detection has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the federal government.
The Phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research Grant comes from the National Science Foundation for continued development of a membrane that can be used in biological research and diagnostics, according to a press release from Maine Manufacturing LLC.
The membrane surface, which was funded by an earlier SBIR grant, is a composite of track-etched membrane and nitrocellulose and has demonstrated utility in improving sensitivity of immunoassays and microarrays.
The Phase 2 grant will allow the company to work on creation of a new tool for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of cancers at an individual level.
“We are pleased that the National Science Foundation recognized the potential of this new technology to become an important tool for the application of personalized medicine and understanding disease at an individual level,” said Michael Harvey, chief science officer at the company. “The funding will accelerate the realization of new products incorporating the technology.”
