Bowdoin baseball team opens with sweep

LEESBURG, Fla. — Oliver Van Zant pitched a one-hit shutout in the second game, leading Bowdoin College of Brunswick to a 3-1 victory and a sweep of its season-opening baseball doubleheader against Endicott College Monday.

The Polar Bears won the first game 3-1 behind the pitching of Christian Martin.

In the nightcap, Van Zant surrendered only a third-inning single by Nick Roberts as Bowdoin prevailed. He struck out seven and walked two.

John Lefeber and Matt Savard rapped RBI singles for the Polar Bears and Dan Findley doubled and singled.

Tyler Hitchcock scattered seven hits for 0-3 Endicott.

In the opener, Martin limited the Gulls to four hits and one unearned run in six innings. He fanned six and walked one before Bangor’s Ian Edwards worked a perfect seventh for the save.

Findley posted two singles and two RBIs to pace Bowdoin. Jordan Edgett provided an RBI single.

Mike Nich pitched six innings of six-hit, one-run (unearned) ball for Endicott before the Polar Bears scored twice in the seventh off reliever Tyler Hill.
