State police arrest two in connection with Island Falls bank robbery

ISLAND FALLS, Maine — Maine State Police have arrested two Hancock County men in connection with Tuesday’s robbery at the Katahdin Trust Co. branch on Crystal Road.

Joseph Fallica, 21, of Trenton and Clinton Michaud, 22, of Ellsworth were taken into custody about 5 p.m. Friday, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a telephone interview.

The arrests took place at the state police barracks in Ellsworth, where Fallica and Michaud had undergone questioning earlier in the afternoon, he said.

The two suspects, who are charged with felony robbery, were en route to Aroostook County Jail in Houlton on Friday night, McCausland said. They are expected to make initial court appearances on Monday or Tuesday, depending upon the availability of a judge, he said.

McCausland said impressions taken of tire tracks left behind by the getaway vehicle, which was parked between two nearby potato houses, led a team of state police detectives and troopers to the suspects.

He said tracks were connected to a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee belonging to Michaud’s girlfriend, who was not charged in connection with the robbery.

According to McCausland, state police believe that Fallico went into the bank and robbed it and that Michaud, a former resident of Island Falls, drove the Jeep the pair used to leave the crime scene.

In a news release earlier this week, McCausland said that the bank robbery occurred shortly before noon Tuesday when a lone man dressed from head to toe in black demanded money and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash in a blue bag that he had brought with him.

McCausland said that none of the money has been recovered.

Troopers said no weapon was shown and only two bank tellers were in the building at the time.
