BUCKSPORT, Maine — The Eastern Area Agency on Aging and Bucksport Bay Healthy Communities Coalition are sponsoring an eight-week “Matter of Balance” program aimed at helping older adults increase their physical activity levels and reduce their fear of falling.

The program begins Tuesday, March 13, and will run from 1 to 3 p.m. the seven Tuesdays thereafter at the Jewett School Community Center, located at 66 Bridge St. in Bucksport. Preregistration is required and the cost is $15.

Program participants will learn to view falls and the fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals of increasing activity, exercise to increase strength and balance, and change their environment to reduce fall risk factors.

Program activities include group discussion, problem solving, role playing, skill building, assertiveness training, videotapes and practical solutions. The program is geared toward anyone who has fallen in the past or has restricted activities because of concerns of falling as well as anyone interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength.

Financial assistance is available to cover the $15 fee. To preregister, call Mary Jane Bush at 469-6682.
