BANGOR, Maine — The American Heart Association in Maine will hold its 13th annual Northeastern Maine Heart Ball Saturday, April 14, at the Bangor Auditorium. The Heart Ball is the association’s major fundraising event in the Bangor area. The goal of the event is to raise $152,000 to support association research, education and advocacy necessary to combat cardiovascular disease, Maine’s leading cause of death.

With the theme “Hope For Your Heart,” the evening will feature a World War II USO theme complete with a Bob Hope impersonator from Las Vegas. Guests will be asked dress in clothing from the 1940s, if they wish. The event also will feature a cocktail hour, live and silent auctions with more than 200 items up for bid, dinner, a 1940s variety show and dancing. Last year’s event drew 330 people, raising $113,000.

The 2012 Heart Ball chairwoman is Michelle Hood, president and CEO of Eastern Maine Healthcare System.

“Cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease and stroke, is still the leading cause of death in Maine,” she said. “The good news is that these diseases largely are preventable through healthy lifestyle changes such as good nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation and knowing your numbers — blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.”

The Heart Ball’s executive leadership team includes Michele Collins, director of marketing at Hollywood Slots Hotel and Raceway; Ed Hennessey, CEO, Machias Savings Bank; William P. Lucy, senior vice president and division president, Merrill Bank, a division of People’s United Bank; Debbie Richards, Heart Center administrator, Eastern Maine Medical Center; Herbert R. Sargent, owner, Sargent Corporation; Mike Shea, president, Webber Energy Fuels; Karl Ward, Nickerson O’Day; Dr. Alan Jansujwicz, cardiologist, Northeast Cardiology Associates; Amy Cummings, Open Your Heart chairwoman; Jason Pelletier, Sanofi-Aventis; Jeff Russell, People’s United Bank; Miles Theeman, Affiliated Healthcare Systems; Margaret Sudborough, Eaton Peabody; and Michele Wittine, assistant store manager, Hannaford Supermarkets.

The Heart Ball’s media sponsors are the Bangor Daily News, 97.1 The Bear and WVII 7. WVII 7 anchors Cindy Michaels and Tony Consiglio will emcee the main program. A member of the community will be selected by the event’s executive leadership team to receive the 2012 Crystal Heart Award.

Limited space is remaining for corporate sponsorships which include a table for eight guests and marketing benefits. Individual tickets also are available at $125 each and may be purchased by visiting heart.org/northeasternmaineheartball. Area businesses may show support by donating an auction item.
