MACHIAS, Maine — A new public outdoor ice skating rink has opened at the University of Maine at Machias.
Located on the UMM soccer field, the 50-by-100-foot rink was constructed and filled with water in mid-February, but inconsistent and unseasonably warm temperatures meant that waiting for the base to freeze would take longer than expected. With temperatures back to normal, project coordinators say that the ice is finally ready.
“Students have always used the campus pond for skating and pond hockey, but they really wanted a surface that was consistent and easy to maintain,” said Andrea Ednie, assistant professor of recreation management, who coordinated the project for UMM. “This is truly a project that will benefit the entire community.”
The Machias Fire Department provided a generator and the water required to create the rink.
Use of the skating rink is free and open to the public.
