CUSHING, Maine — Residents will act later this month on a municipal budget that reduces spending by about 8 percent. They also will elect town officials and decide whether beer and wine can be sold.

The election of town officials and the liquor referendums will be decided at the polls 2-8 p.m. Monday, March 19, at the community center and town office. The remainder of the warrant will be acted on at the annual town meeting beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at the same location.

There is one contested race, with Randoph Robbins challenging incumbent Daniel Staples for a three-year seat on the Board of Selectmen. Incumbent Robert Worthing is unopposed for another three-year term on the board.

Loren Andrews is unopposed for another three-year term on the RSU 13 board.

The proposed municipal budget for 2012 is $589,057, down 8 percent from the $640,252 approved by voters at the 2011 town meeting.

Last year, the budget included $125,000 for the town’s share of repairs to the Salt Pond Bridge that is shared with Friendship. That was a one-time expense that led to the bridge being reopened in November after it was closed for a year because of its deteriorated condition.

The amount of property taxes to be raised to pay for the municipal expenses, however, is up 5 percent. Money for the bridge last year came from excise taxes.

The largest account in the proposed budget is $95,000 to pay toward operations of the Waldoboro transfer station. The amount is the same as in 2011.

The administration account is proposed at $76,000, an increase of $4,000. Town office salaries are recommended to voters at $41,157, down nearly $5,000.

Snow removal is budgeted at $50,000, up $15,000 from last year.

There are two ballot articles on the sale of malt liquor and wine to be consumed off-premises. One would allow sales on Sunday and the other would allow sales on days other than Sunday.
