ORLANDO, Fla. — A Cheer Magic All-Stars squad, from Big 10 Cheer and Dance on Central Street in Bangor, won the Senior Co-Ed Level 3 division at the Contest of Champions Nationals on Sunday.
The team, one of three Cheer Magic squads participating in the tournament, earned 232 points out of a possible 280 to win by 19 points over the other team in the division, The Extreme Heat AllStars Blaze from Lake Wales, Fla.
“I expected we would do well [score-wise], but I didn’t know how we would compare with others,” said Big 10 owner Brittany Madden.
The gap was surprisingly large, according to Madden, who is completing her first year as owner of Big 10.
“Five points is a huge difference, where, in basketball, it’s considered a close game,” she said.
Their 232-point score did well in comparison to other teams as well.
“Out of a full 36 teams [over various age groups and ability levels], we placed fifth,” said Madden.
The Cheer Magic’s best stunt was the pyramid.
“Eight is the highest score,” said Madden. “Four of the five judges gave us the full eight, which is amazing, and the fifth gave us 7.9.”
Annie Hettermann, a junior at Bangor High; Laura Doyon, a freshman at Hampden; and Haley Michaud, a senior at Schenck of East Millinocket, are the captains of the 30-member squad.
“There are 27 girls and three boys,” Madden said. “They’re all out there at the same time. They take up a lot of space.”
The Youth Level 1 squad was third out of four teams in its division, and the Senior Level 2 team was third out of three.
“This is the first year that Youth Level 1 was not last. They were ecstatic,” Madden said.
Forty-six cheerers went to Florida, with some participating on two teams and a couple on all three. The club has members from about a dozen schools in the Bangor area, according to Madden.
