Dress for Success expands to Bangor

BANGOR, Maine — Kimberly Allen, executive director of Dress for Success Southern Maine, announced recently that the Portland-based affiliate organization will open a Bangor branch and changing its name to Dress for Success Maine. The organization will partner with Bangor Housing Authority, which will provide space at no cost at its headquarters on Davis Road in Bangor.

A worldwide organization, Dress for Success promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Since 1997, Dress for Success has served more than 600,000 women around the world.

“I am so grateful to Bangor Housing Authority for this partnership that will enable women to be part of the Dress for Success Maine community,” Allen said. “By opening a branch in Bangor, we will be able to broaden our reach and affect change in so many lives.”

The announcement was made at a Freeport celebration for Bangor blogger Susan Stephenson’s Dress to Impress Project, a monthlong awareness campaign of wearing the same L.L. Bean Signature dress every day during January and accessorized by donations from more than 50 Maine business, all to raise awareness for the Dress for Success organization.

Allen said Dress for Success Maine also will also support programs that promote job training to ensure women looking for work have the skills and confidence they need to find success.

Mike Myatt, executive director of Bangor Housing Authority said, “Bangor Housing is excited about this partnership and the opportunities it will create for our residents and the greater Bangor community. Dress for Success Maine will open new doors, helping women prepare for entering the work force and helping them succeed while employed.”

Dress for Success Maine is seeking volunteers and donors to support the statewide organization. Ways to get involved include making a monetary contribution, volunteering as a personal shopper, Career Center counselor or speaker, hosting an event and many more opportunities.
