ROCKLAND, Maine — The Knox County commissioners and Knox County Budget Committee are scheduled to hold a work session 4 p.m. Thursday, March 1, on the 2012 budget.
The work session is a prelude to a formal public hearing and votes by both boards at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at the Knox County Courthouse in Rockland.
The meetings were scheduled after the commissioners agreed two weeks ago that the county had failed to meet the state’s public notice requirement when it approved the budget on Dec. 1.
There had been a groundswell of opposition by towns in Knox County over the inadequacy of the public notice. Criticism of the budget centered on raises for some department heads and other employees that ranged as high as 40 percent.
The three commissioners had approved the budget unanimously while the budget committee split 5-4 with the tie-breaking vote cast by a board member by telephone conference call while he was in Washington, D.C.
