Police identify Trenton woman killed Saturday in MDI crash

By Kevin Miller, BDN Staff

MOUNT DESERT, Maine — Police released the name on Sunday of a Trenton woman who died in a single-vehicle crash on Mount Desert Island on Saturday afternoon.

Hope Cummings, 43, was northbound on Route 102 in Mount Desert not far from the Southwest Harbor town line just before 2 p.m. Saturday when her car drove off the side of the road. Her 2009 Chevy Cobalt then struck a ledge and rolled over at least twice before coming to rest on its wheels on the opposite side of the road, according to Sgt. Kevin Edgecomb with the Mount Desert Police Department.

Cummings was pronounced dead at the scene.

Edgecomb said Sunday afternoon that it was still unclear why Cummings lost control of her vehicle, noting that the road was dry at the time. The investigation is continuing and will include toxicology testing, which is standard procedure in Maine for fatal accidents.

That section of Route 102, located just south of Echo Lake, was closed for approximately three hours Saturday while rescue crews and police worked at the scene. Fire, police and rescue crews from Mount Desert and Southwest Harbor as well as EMS personnel from Northeast Harbor assisted at the crash. A deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the accident reconstruction on Saturday.
