BANGOR, Maine — The sixth-seeded Deer Isle-Stonington High School Mariners will meet top seed Jonesport-Beals in Saturday’s 10:45 a.m. Eastern Maine Class D Tournament boys basketball final after upsetting No. 2 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill 67-55 Thursday.
Junior guard Sam Grindle scored 23 points and dished out six assists, both game-highs, and also grabbed seven rebounds to pace the Mariners to the victory at the Bangor Auditorium.
Junior forward Tim Cormier contributed 17 points and nine rebounds and junior guard Connor Morey chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds.
The Mariners used a 14-0 run in the second quarter to build a 47-34 lead and used clutch free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off the rallying Panthers, who cut the lead to four on two occasions in the final 1:56.
Grindle hit 10 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Deer Isle-Stonington shot 7-for-12 from the floor in the decisive third quarter while Central Aroostook went just 3 for 11.
Senior center Mike McClung had 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds and four blocked shots for defending state champ Central Aroostook, which finished up at 18-3. He also had a team-high four assists.
Brendan York had 12 points, three rebounds and two steals for Central Aroostook. Dan Brewer contributed 11 points.
