Cony, Edward Little girls advance to Friday night final

AUGUSTA, Maine — Top-ranked Cony of Augusta and No. 2 Edward Little of Auburn will meet for the Eastern Maine Class A girls basketball championship after winning their semifinals at the Augusta Civic Center on Wednesday afternoon.

Undefeated Cony used 19 points from Mia Diplock and 18 from Josie Lee to fend off No. 4 Mount Ararat of Topsham 46-39, while Edward Little used a balanced attack and a second-half surge to oust No. 6 Skowhegan 54-39.

Cony (20-0) and EL (17-3) will square off for the regional title at 7 p.m. Friday in their third meeting of the season. Cony edged the Red Eddies 65-64 at Augusta on Dec. 13 and earned a 65-56 victory at Auburn on Jan. 24.

In Wednesday’s first game, Edward Little led Skowhegan just 19-15 at halftime, but Kory Norcross scored seven third-quarter points as the Red Eddies extended their lead to 37-25. Freshman Tianna Harriman scored all six of her points in the fourth quarter to help EL preserve the victory.

Norcross, Kate Sawyer and Ashlee Arnold each scored 12 points for Edward Little while Brooke Reynolds scored 10.

Cheyenne Malloy and A.J. Martineau each scored eight points for 12-8 Skowhegan. The Indians’ leading scorer, Amanda Johnson, was held to four points.

In the second game, Cony led just 24-22 at halftime but pulled ahead in the third quarter by outscoring the 13-7 Eagles 11-5 to take a 35-27 lead into the fourth quarter. Diplock then scored seven points in the final period to help the Rams secure the victory.

Kristy Willey and Leah Hitchcock led Mount Ararat with 10 points each.
