McVicar lifts Calais past Narraguagus

BANGOR, Maine — Freshman point guard Maddie McVicar scored 15 of her team-high 23 points in the fourth quarter Wednesday to lift Calais to a 49-46 Eastern Maine Class C girls basketball quarterfinal victory over Narraguagus of Harrington.

The second-seeded Blue Devils (16-0) advance to Friday’s 7:05 p.m. semifinal against No. 3 Central of Corinth, a 34-24 winner over Bucksport in Wednesday’s early quarterfinal.

Seventh-seeded Narraguagus (12-8), behind the determined play of Ripley King (24 points), built a 30-24 lead with 2:26 left in the third quarter, but could not hold it.

McVicar hit two 3-pointers during a 10-0 spurt early in the fourth quarter that gave Calais the lead for good. The Blue Devils hung on despite going 5 for 14 from the foul line in the period.

Brook Young provdied eight points and seven rebounds for the Blue Devils, while Paige Gillespie grabbed nine rebounds.

Anna Ramsay posted a double-double for Narraguagus with 11 piots and 10 rebounds. Lauren Ramsey added seven points.
