Mainers invited to meet, support farmers, fishermen

Posted Feb. 22, 2012, at 3:22 p.m.

Mainers are invited to support local farmers and fishermen at any of 15 locations around the state this weekend.

The event, “Meet Your Farmers and Fishermen: a Celebration of Community Supported Agriculture and Fisheries,” is designed to show participants the benefits of buying shares of a farmer’s harvest or a fisherman’s catch in advance.

This community-based model of local food buying provides operating support to local farms and fishermen while giving the shareholder locally grown and harvested food direct from the producer at a fair price.

Participants will learn about buying a share, become acquainted with local seasonal foods, meet local farmers and fishermen and discover how to grow a relationship with them. Fisheries may not be represented in all locations.

Admission is free. Each location will have local produce and other products available for sale, light refreshments featuring local seasonal foods and live entertainment.
