BANGOR, Maine — Sophomore forward Samantha Keegan banked in a short jumper with 3.8 seconds remaining Tuesday afternoon as No. 8 Houlton stunned top-ranked Orono 45-44 in an Eastern Maine Class C girls basketball quarterfinal at the Bangor Auditorium.

Houlton (14-6) will play No. 4 Stearns of Millinocket in Friday’s semifinals. Stearns defeated No. 5 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 46-24 in the earlier semifinal.

Orono ends its season with a 15-4 record.

Orono had taken its first lead since early in the first quarter on an inside basket by junior center Jillian Woodward with 52 seconds left and got the ball back after a turnover.

But Houlton’s Amanda Fogarty forced a held ball, and teammate Marina Cameron scored from the lane with 22 seconds left to give the Shiretowners a 43-42 edge.

Woodward made two free throws with 13.4 seconds left to give Orono back the lead, but gave Houlton one last chance.

Tori Hanson’s shot from the lane was blocked, but Keegan grabbed the loose ball and with time winding down scored from the lane to give Houlton back the lead.

Orono had one last chance, but a contested 3-point try by Laura Triandafillou fell short.

Fogarty led Houlton with a game-high 19 points, 14 in the first half to help stake coach Shawn Graham’s club to a 20-17 lead. Cameron added 10 points and Hanson scored nine while Keegan finished with five points and 12 rebounds.

Woodward, plagued by foul trouble for much of the game, finished with 17 points and nine rebounds for Orono, including 11 fourth-quarter points. Kate Berry added eight points for the Red Riots.
