DOVER-FOXCROFT — After reviewing 11 bids, the Board of Selectmen recently awarded the soil remediation and cleanup project at the former Maine Leathers Tannery site at Browns Mill to Gary M. Pomeroy Logging of Hermon for $172,872.

“We had bids from as far away as Pennsylvania,” Rhode Island and Connecticut, Town Manager Jack Clukey said. The bids ranged from Pomeroy Logging’s up to about $663,000.

“Ransom Environmental Consulting went through the low bid on the sheet and they felt that the bid was in order,” Clukey said. “They are familiar with Pomeroy Logging’s work.”

In Orono last fall, Ransom Environmental Consulting and Pomeroy Logging worked on a brownfields project similar in size and scope to Browns Mill. Ransom Environmental Consulting said in a letter to the town that it has firsthand knowledge of the company’s qualifications and believes Pomeroy Logging would be capable of performing the required services.

The bid of nearly $173,000 could mean that some funds for the project will be used elsewhere on the Piscataquis River property.

“We can do anything with it that pertains to remediation and site improvement,” Clukey said.

In other business, Clukey said the Dover-Foxcroft budget for 2012-13 is being developed. “We’re working on the budget and at our next board meeting we will have a budget to talk about, seeing what the latest projections are,” he said. Town committees have met and discussed the expense side of the budget and Clukey is examining the revenue side, with the updated information to be presented to the board on Monday, Feb. 27.

The budget advisory committee is scheduled to have meetings on Wednesday evenings in March — at 6:30 p.m. in the town office — and will look over different aspects of the spending plan at the first three meetings. The March 28 session is scheduled to be a joint meeting with selectmen and a public hearing would follow on Wednesday, April 4. The morning town meeting would be Saturday, April 28, to affirm the warrant article for the referendum vote in June.
