Kofstad, Eager lead Presque Isle boys past Ellsworth

By Larry Mahoney, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — The fifth-seeded Presque Isle High School Wildcats avenged two regular season losses to Ellsworth in the Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinals Saturday morning as they received 20 points and eight rebounds from senior forward Andrew Kofstad and 17 points and 11 rebounds from Matt Eager to upset the Eagles 57-46.

Eager also dished out four assists and Kofstad had three.

The Eagles were at a distinct height disadvantage and had no answer for the 6-foot-3-inch Kofstad and 6-foot-6-inch Eager. Ellsworth had just one player over taller than 6 feet 1 inch: 6-foot-3-inch forward Kyle Haslam.

Presque Isle out-rebounded Ellsworth 26-16 and turned in a clinical defensive performance, limiting the Eagles to 31.5 percent shooting from the floor and forcing a number of turnovers.

Presque Isle outscored Ellsworth 9-3 in the second period to take a 22-17 halftime lead and the Wildcats rattled off a 10-2 run to open the second half as Kofstad hit a pair of threes and a layup and fed Eager for a base line layup.

The Eagles clawed to within 34-28 on a Nick Holt three-pointer and his top-of-the-key jumper but Kofstad answered by nailing a three, Eager had two free throws and Cole Richards converted a layup to re-establish a 41-28 lead and Ellsworth couldn’t get any closer than nine the rest of the way.

Tyler Brooks had eight points for the 14-5 Wildcats while 13-6 Ellsworth was led by Nick Holt’s 11 points, Steven Mahon’s 10, eight apiece by Josh Bean and Thomas Sawyer and Haslam’s seven points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists. Bean and Sawyer had four rebounds and three assists each. Holt had three rebounds.
