CORNISH, Maine — A local man was killed Wednesday afternoon when the car he was driving went off Route 25 and struck a rock, according to police.

York County Maj. William King said on Thursday that Brenden Lowenberg, 26, was headed west on Route 25 in his 1996 Subaru when the vehicle veered off the highway and struck a large rock.

The accident was reported at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, King said. Rescue crews from the Cornish Fire Department and Sacopee Rescue responded, but Lowenberg was pronounced dead at the scene.

York County sheriff’s deputies also responded, King said. Traffic was shut down for 2½ hours on Route 25 while authorities investigated the crash.
