MARS HILL – Gerald W. Lawrence, 91, passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at a Presque Isle hospital. He was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Fort Fairfield, son of James and Ellen (Smith) Lawrence.

Gerald was a graduate of Aroostook Central Institute, Mars Hill, attending from 1934-1938, and also earned a degree in education from Madawaska Training School in 1940 and Aroostook State Normal School in 1950. He married Mary Elizabeth (Willard) Lawrence, June 9, 1942, and they shared 69 years of marriage together. He worked at Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut and then entered the U.S. Army, serving in the occupation force in Germany. After the war, he returned to Mars Hill and taught school at Bridgewater Classical Academy, and also worked at Presque Isle Air Force Base. Gerald took over his father’s plumbing business and operated it for many years before his retirement. He enjoyed golfing, square dancing as well as hunting, fishing, camping and bowling. Gerald was also a longtime member of American Legion William Cousins Post, No. 118, Mars Hill.

In addition to his wife, Mary, he leaves behind a son, James Lawrence of Boston; brother, Philip Lawrence and his wife, Beryl, of Mars Hill; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Donald; and sister, Viola "Peggy" Smith.

A memorial service will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Duncan Funeral Home, 8 Main St., Mars Hill, with Pastor Lawrence Beals officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at King’s Grove Cemetery, Mars Hill. Online condolences may be expressed at
