Levant man arrested after attempted theft of razor blades

BREWER, Maine — A Levant man found himself behind bars Thursday after Brewer police were called to Walmart to look into a theft complaint.

According to an arrest report, Paul Mason, 31, was detained by a store loss prevention officer shortly before 1:30 p.m. after he allegedly tried to steal $22 worth of razor blades, Brewer police Lt. Chris Martin said Friday.

When Sgt. David Lord arrived, he determined that Mason was subject to bail and probation conditions, Martin said. Given that, Mason not only was charged with theft but also was arrested on charges of violation of bail conditions and probation violation, Martin said.

Thursday’s arrest was not Mason’s first brush with the law, according to court and police listings previously published in the Bangor Daily News.

In August 2009, Mason was one of two men that Maine Drug Enforcement Agency officers arrested in connection with a diverted prescription drug trafficking operation.

His criminal history also includes convictions for violation of bail conditions in 2011, possession of drug paraphernalia in 2009 and 2007, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in 2005 and paraphernalia possession in 2003.

As of Friday evening, Mason remained at Penobscot County Jail, a jail official confirmed.
