SEBAGO, Maine — The mild New England winter has claimed another cold weather tradition.
Thin ice has forced cancellation of this month’s annual ice fishing derby on Sebago Lake.
The prizes that would have been given out Feb. 18 and 19 — including $100,000 for a state record lake trout — will be up for grabs in the statewide ice fishing derby March 3 and 4.
As many as 6,000 people have gathered in past years for the derby and related events.
The derby was also cancelled in 2002 and 2007 and ended early in 2010 after seven people and a number of vehicles fell through the ice.
Business owners in the area told The Portland Press Herald the cancellation is just another hit to tourism this winter.
