US military deaths in Afghanistan at 1,766

As of Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, at least 1,766 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.

The AP count is six less than the Defense Department’s tally, last updated at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

At least 1,478 military service members have died in Afghanistan as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers.

Outside of Afghanistan, the department reports at least 102 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, 12 were the result of hostile action.

The AP count of total OEF casualties outside of Afghanistan is three more than the department’s tally.

The Defense Department also counts three military civilian deaths.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 15,310 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department.

Latest identifications:

— 1st Lt. David A. Johnson, 24, of Horicon, Wis.; died Jan. 25, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered after encountering an improvised explosive device while conducting a dismounted patrol; assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

—Capt. Joshua C. Pairsh, 29, of Equality, Ill.; died Jan. 22 in the United States of a noncombat-related illness; assigned to 4th Civil Affairs Group, Marine Forces Reserve, based out of Washington, D.C.

— Cpl. Christopher G. Singer, 23, of Temecula, Calif.; died Jan. 21 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan; assigned to 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.
