AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine’s Education Department says new test scores show students improved slightly in reading and more significantly in math.

Scores from the latest New England Common Assessment Program tests, taken in October, also show a slight decrease in writing.

Education officials say the test is one of several measures of performance. The state is planning to retire the New England Common Assessment Program after 2013.

In its place, Maine will administer a new, more sophisticated assessment system starting in the 2014-15 school year.

The new tests will assess students on the new Common Core State Standards in math and English language arts, adopted by Maine and 44 other states within the last two years.

  1. Ya think it has something to do with computers. My son in 7th grade had to write a letter to a friend as an assignment  . The teacher said look at this. i saw nothing wrong lol. He said he could have ran a word processing Program spell check an printed it off.  No wonder they can not write. That was at A Bangor school. If they are printed off at home I wonder how many Parents helped? It dose not seem to put ALL kids on a level playing field when not everyone understands the rules.  No wonder they can not wright. They you look at school rankings and they suppress  I wrighting scores to make thier schools look better. I know I can not spell or write well but at least i do not use spell check. Some of these kids with high grades score much lower than my son does on standardized test. I wonder how many Cheat to make the grade. The teach said its less than 10% well what do you do about it expel the kids? Give them a poor grade?  Reply Its kinda hard to prove. The system is such a joke . I respect this teacher just the rule the teach has to follow is a joke.

      1. Ya It was not really ment to be . I think part of the problem is the high standards . They seem to think it is a perfect world. Bangor high school has a reputation for high test scores and high college attendance but also has oe of the higher drop out rates in the state. make it as difficult as you can for disadvantaged kids they drop out and make the school look better. Betsy Webb Get a big fat raise. I do not thing it is anything they intend to do. That issue is not a major priority  It is too much about politics and not really about the kids. Don’t get me wrong My son has GREAT  teachers its the system that is broken. Most the kids at Bangor are getting a good education for the disadvantaged I do not thing they fair as well . When Bangor has a higher drop out rate the Corinth . A smaller percentage of disadvantaged kids teachers pain much more . Makes you wonder if Its more of a social class thing. Now Corinth has lower test scores lower college rates . What concerns me most  is the By all right the drop out rate should be less at Bangor high. Maybe if your poor or uneducated you might be better off sending your kids to Corinth . If you are middle class and educated maybe you would be better off spending your kids to Bangor. It is not a perfect world. NO ONE WANTS TO HERE THE TRUTH.

  2. What year did they start teaching kids to [I guess you call it print]. The secretary at the doctors office sends you a report and it’s hand printed, not done on a computer. It’s hardly legible. No one will convince me that anything is better than the Palmer method for teaching kids to write. There are many instances where you have to fill out a form [hand written], everyone should be taught to write legibly.

  3. duh!. Wait until these first graders with i-pads get a little bit older. Then test them. No suprise really. Heck my own cursive skills are crap now because of my dependence on the computer. I am able to write more legibly when I go back to the basics of my drafting classes from H.S. In this age of the google search, kids don’t have to work at researching for papers that they are working on as well.
We are raising a bunch of dummies that can text a hundred words a minute but won’t be able to fix their own sink or change their own automobile tire. I would like to personally thank my generation for raising a bunch of spoiled “friends” instead of being parents.
One last thing to think about. The generation we are raising will be the ones to  take care of us when we get old and infirm.

    1. Do any of you understand what it means when your writing skills are being tested?  It’s not your handwriting,  it’s your ability to write a cohesive thought.  You are being checked on grammar, spelling and punctuation.

        1. It could, but it could also be your teacher. It depends how you use the program.

Although, he has a point. Iproducts push improper grammar, like the comma, period, question mark etc. should be inside the quotes not outside. It is hard to fix. The programers need to be correct too. Someone should tell someone at Macintosh.
