WATERBORO, Maine — Five people were sent to the hospital early Monday after a head-on collision in York County, according to police.

A black 2001 Toyota Tundra driven by Walter Banks, 44, of Waterboro was headed northbound on U.S. Route 202 when his vehicle left the road and struck a snowbank, according to Maj. William King of the York County Sheriff’s Department.

Banks overcorrected his vehicle and veered across the centerline, slamming into a 1997 Ford driven by Leigh Kirby, 46, of Lovell, King said.

Banks had a minor passenger in his vehicle, King said, while Kirby had two passengers, John Butters, 48, of Stow and his son, Michael Butters, 27, of Waterboro.

All five were transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with injuries that were not life-threatening, King said.

Both vehicles were demolished.
