Bucksport, Jay and Skowhegan paper mills report leadership changes

By Kevin Miller, BDN Staff

BUCKSPORT, Maine — Several Maine paper mills have new faces in top management posts.

Verso Paper announced Wednesday that Wally McDonald has been named manager of the Bucksport facility effective immediately. Before accepting the new position, McDonald served as operations manager of Verso’s Androscoggin mill in Jay and previously worked as director of pulp and power manufacturing support for the company.

Mike Laverdiere, a 19-year veteran at the Androscoggin facility, will take over the role of operations manager in Jay. Laverdiere most recently worked as business unit manager for paper at the Jay mill.

This is the first change at the top in Bucksport in more than five years, Verso spokesman Bill Cohen said.

McDonald also has worked in mills in Virginia and South Carolina for International Paper and Union Camp during his 24 years in the paper business, according to a press release from Verso.

He replaces Michael Haws, who stepped down as mill manager in Bucksport last month in order to take over as managing director of the Sappi Fine Paper North America mill in Skowhegan, Sappi announced recently.

Haws, in turn, replaced Fred Oettinger, who retired after 36 years in the industry, including five years running the Somerset Mill in Skowhegan, according to Sappi.
