Logan Mars of Scarborough and Luke Libby of Thornton Academy of Saco were named winners of the second annual Frank J. Gaziano Lineman Awards during an awards banquet Sunday at the Augusta Civic Center.

The award is presented to outstanding offensive and defensive high school linemen based on their play on the field, an application essay and subsequent interviews with a selection committee.

Each winner receives a trophy and a $2,500 scholarship.

Mars, a 6-foot-2-inch, 247-pound guard, was named the Gaziano offensive lineman of the year. A two-time Southwestern Maine Activities Association all-star, Mars plans to continue his playing career next fall at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

Libby, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound defensive lineman, was selected as the Gaziano defensive lineman of the year. Also a two-time SMAA all-star, Libby had 64 tackles and six quarterback sacks last fall. He is undecided on his college plans.

Runners-up for the offensive lineman award were Rudy Pandora of Lewiston and Matt McLean of Windham, while Nate Porter of Portland also was a finalist.

Runners-up for the defensive lineman award were Max Andrews of John Bapst of Bangor and Matt Ross of Cape Elizabeth. Christian Deschenes of Cheverus of Portland also was a finalist.

Each runner-up received a $500 scholarship.
